How to Find the Right Nursery for Your Child
Choosing a nursery is a big decision, and it is completely natural to feel unsure about where to start. Every child is different, and the right nursery is not about finding the “best” one on paper, but the one that feels right for your child and your family.
Start by thinking about your child’s individual needs and personality. Some children thrive in busy, energetic environments, while others need calmer spaces and a slower pace. Consider what helps your child feel safe, settled, and confident. A good nursery will recognise that children develop at different rates and will support them as individuals rather than expecting them to fit a set mould.
Visiting a nursery is one of the most important steps. A website or brochure can tell you a lot, but nothing replaces walking through the door. Pay attention to how the space feels. Are the children engaged and relaxed? Do staff interact warmly and at the child’s level? Trust your instincts. If it feels calm, welcoming, and well organised, that’s usually a good sign.
Take time to talk to the nursery team. Ask how they support learning through play, how they handle transitions such as settling in, and how they communicate with parents. A strong nursery values partnership with families and will be open, approachable, and happy to answer questions.
Outdoor space is another important factor to consider. Time outside supports physical development, confidence, and wellbeing. Ask how often children go outdoors and how outdoor play is used as part of learning, not just as a break from indoor activities.
Food and nutrition are often overlooked, but they play a key role in a child’s day. Ask about meals and snacks, how food is prepared, and how children are encouraged to develop healthy eating habits. A thoughtful approach to nutrition supports energy levels, concentration, and positive relationships with food from an early age.
Recommendations can also be valuable. Speaking to other parents about their experiences can offer reassurance and insight, especially around settling in, communication, and consistency of care. That said, remember that every family is different, so use recommendations as guidance rather than the final decision.
Finally, give yourself permission to take your time where possible. The right nursery should feel like an extension of home. When you find a place where your child feels happy, supported, and understood, you will know.
